One of the major things that can impact our results in business that many business owners tend to overlook is the power of words that we use.
The words that we use in our everyday lives can actually impact the world around us in many ways. However, they can be categorised in two forms: External words and Internal words.
1) External words.
These are the words we choose to say to other people. More often than not, these words will shape the people around us. For example, the words that you choose to give children as feedback and how you positively reinforce their good behaviours are going to shape them as they grow up.
The same concept applies to your business with your team members. What are you saying to them? Are you building them up? Are you always nagging and blaming? The words that you choose to use will shape the culture and in turn, shape the dynamics of your small business.
2) Internal words
These are the words that we say to ourselves (in our head). There can be moments when you second-guess yourself saying “Oh, I am not good enough” or “I don’t have enough time”. The reality is you do have enough time – you have 24 hours, just like everyone else. However, if you keep telling yourself that you don’t have the time, you won’t. If you keep telling yourself that you don’t have the money, you won’t. If you keep telling yourself that it is not possible, then it won’t be possible.
But if you start telling yourself what is possible and thinking and saying positive things, then you are going to focus on getting what you want out of your business.
The key here is to think about the words you are using – both for others and yourself. By doing that, you will start to shape your business the way you want it to be.
Good luck with your business.
